3 Takeaways from Social Media Marketing World 2019


What’s going on today we’re doing
something a little bit different for Tip For tip we’re gonna talk about social
media marketing world 2019 we just recently came back as you can see our
foreheads are pretty burnt mine’s not burnt I put on sunblock I didn’t for those who
don’t know my name is Aaron my name is Christian and this is not our normal
format like Christian said normally we’re doing a pre-recorded session we
are going to go live here and kind of explain a little bit about social media
marketing world so first thing what is social media marketing world what is
that so social media marketing the world this
is the agenda or the guide the conference guide it’s a the big biggest conference
in the world for social media marketers agencies business owners brands who are
looking to grow on social media they cover everything from let me just read
you a few of these how do a double your traffic and conversion conversions with
check BOTS things like using Twitter video to grow
your audience I mean the topics range from every single social media network
out there Facebook Twitter Pinterest YouTube there’s a little bit of SEO in
there they even have a copywriting they have a lot of loud a lot of good stuff
in here yeah there’s there’s probably maybe 10% of it it’s like overall
business tactics that are gonna help you that also help with social media like
you said for the little blogging SEO so there’s a smaller portion of that but it
is very relevant to the social media yeah and they have a bunch of speakers I
think so we’re probably 200 speakers we’re talking about Daniel Harmon
who’s with Harmon brothers who probably seen some of their videos they’ve done
the squatty potty the unicorn with the pooping ice cream commercial those are
the guys behind that Shana Jolla you got picked that’s Patrick Pat Flynn brand
fans oh so you have a lot of industry leader
and people who have basically paved the way for companies like ours to be in
business essentially because they’ve done all the hard work for us
essentially by working on their businesses and figuring out what works
what doesn’t work on social media and then coming to these conferences to talk
about what they’ve learned inside of their businesses so this is not like
because I know some sometimes conferences they do like if it’s a
technology conference they do like the CEO of IBM and like yeah who more
corporate more corporate these are definitely people who have been in the
trenches and have been working on their businesses using social media marketing
to grow them so it’s very very cool to sort of have peek into their world and
what how they’re doing their things and how they’ve been growing and being
successful in social media I think another thing that’s a cool about this
one I went to one of the topics was how to speak as a social media marketing
world and one thing that I learned was that a they don’t get paid but be they
close together their best work because of all the opportunities from speaking
here so it’s like the highest quality you know they’re doing it because they
care about it and we’ve ran into you guys will see pictures over time of us
posting pictures with these people in this space because they’re just walking
around and happy to give up their time and really spend time with you and
answer questions and take pictures so just gonna say a quick shout out to
Randall Patrick is watching and Erica Bromley thanks for watching what’s up
awesome Randall yeah I thought you were supposed to be
working on Texas and that I’m just kidding
kinda but we missed you this morning and our local marketing academy so yeah I
mean what else we’re gonna talk about a little overview so this is our second
year going last year was crazy cool that’s why we make the second year yeah
we’re blown away by one how big it is and how many a huge how many different
topics you can go to and then the cool thing about what we did last year and
this year is the all-access which we get the recordings to all the tracks and all
the workshops which we’re gonna bus the parties yes the parties are
cool yeah so last year was on it was on the Midway got a network and meet with
the speakers and then a bunch of orders d’oeuvres and food and stuff this year
they didn’t have it on the Midway but they did have an 80s party that I think
we won the best-dressed for the eighties party they didn’t do a competition but
we did we won and you guys check out our Facebook page or scroll down because I
think that I’ve posted at least one or two pictures from that but it’s very
cool it’s a it’s a lot of work and it’s a lot of walking and a lot of I mean
just going like it’s going back to college except for like 10 times more
intense because it’s like college but you’re doing the hours of like high
school so you’re like 8 to 5 every day and then you have a networking event
at night so from like 8:00 to 10:00 you’re just not constant non-stop like
talking and interacting with people so I mean it’s very draining in a lot of a
lot of work yeah I think the other cool thing about it I think you mentioned a
little bit that’s the networking and they have this and trying to look for it
but I can’t find it they have these uh while you go to lunch they have these
tables in this networking Plaza so you can eat lunch and then they have these
tables based on topics so you could have an agency table you could have a social
strategies table you can have a Pinterest table at Twitter table and
people who will sit at that table to eat can talk about that particular topic I
went to a couple times actually I went to the agency tables to see what other
agencies were doing and that’s something that we as a company wanted to sort of
talk to was other agencies see how they’re doing certain things maybe
potentially find a mentor that could tell us you know oh keep doing this oh
don’t do this right but I think for the most part my experience with the with
the networking tables we I mean we’re in a pretty good track of you know the
things that we’re doing um I did find a couple of apps and things like that that
other companies were using that was something that we were actually looking
for was a CRM and let me say yes that’s the thing a lot of agencies don’t use
any CRM so they have project management tools like there’s some of them we
used in Monday dot com we used Click up we
Click up so nobody nobody has heard of Click up nobody has heard of Webflow so
I introduced him to a few apps but the other one that I was really wanting to
know was a CRM which we’re well we have in the in the pipeline his pipe or
well we’ve been eyeball in his pipe drive for a company but we still haven’t
we’re still trying to figure that out and see if that’s gonna be the tool that
we use damn we need a serum yeah that’s I don’t know why they don’t have yeah
but yeah that’s that was another cool thing about the conferences those
networking tables where the topic is already set for you so you can have to
like awkwardly oh what do you want are what I am James so they just kind of give
you the topics and you kind of pick and choose you know where you want to go and
talked about those things and then the last thing that they have is the
sponsors so alter other networking Plaza they also have different sponsors for
different companies and and and different software and different tools
and tech we saw Pat Flynn’s a switch pot I think what it called which is a
handheld what does that call it a tripod which you can use it as a handheld so
you can kind of hold your camera like this or with the flick of a finger you
can set it up and make it a tripod and put it on your table which is really
really cool so those like that kind of stuff
hardware and technology stuff and then they were also like apps like Tube buddy
it was our good friend Joshua shout out to Joshua was working the Tube buddy table
and just showing people you know how it works and he actually showed us some
things that we’re gonna switch yeah sorry that we’re gonna improve on our
YouTube channel so that was pretty cool yeah SDM rush they had a social media
vending machine which was awesome yes they had like notebooks they were giving
away so like instead of buying milk or candy bars you could get like notebooks
and I actually got this phone soap which is like some blue LED put your phone in
there you guys may have seen it on Shark Tank and it’s supposed to like get rid
of all the germs in ten minutes or something like that so I won that by
just putting in something so that was really cool as a software company just
really different ways to interact with businesses and find out you know your
potential new software or new projects to work
with yep all right let’s get into this that was a
long intro and to kind of explain social media marketing but hopefully you guys
have a better idea of what it is and why it’s so important and why we’ve gone for
the last two years so the very first presentation and we went to it on the
first day is our workshops and the workshops are more in depth the more
hands-on it’s like an hour and a half versus 45 minutes and the first one that
Christian and I went together was by Daniel Harmon from the Harmon brothers like
Christian mentioned is from like the squatty potty they’re also known really
well for purple purple yeah the purple mattress you’ve probably seen those so
if you kind of broke down how they create content and that’s like our
number one here which is to create long-form video content and how
important it is what we talk a lot about short videos and how important that is
but also creating a long-form piece of content because you need that much time
to help people figure out about your product and from a cold audience to to
sell that product so as long as it’s engaging
you’ll probably stick with it because I don’t know you guys but I definitely
have watched all the way through on the squatty potty or watched all the way
through on the purple mattress because just so interesting yeah and I think one
of the something that was surprising is that a lot of their videos have gone
viral but that’s never their goal like their goal is not to make viral videos
in any potential client that approaches them and says like we want a viral video
they just sort of turn them away because that’s not what they do and what they
specialize in and something I mean they explain exactly you know what they do if
you’ve heard of like the hero’s journey a lot of movies you know use this model
hobbitses probably a model yeah but kinda like Star Wars and like Luke
Skywalker and like going through like you know the problem and finding a
solution or a person who would help them which is Yoda and the Star Wars analogy
help them through their journey to becoming a hero and that’s sort of the
approach I kind of butcher that to here was sure anybody sort of a
approach of what how they take you know their the long-form video and how they
help you know the to their client create those viral
videos it’s like you know if you look at all other great advertisements they
always have a hero in in their video whether it’s the pooping unicorn and the
prince or if it’s the weird lady in the purple mattresses Goldilocks Goldilocks
or there’s also bed jet which is like a thing that blows air into your covers so
you don’t get hot so it’s like the devil and then the wife of the devil which is
a normal person but anyways so all their videos have characters in them and they
go through the whole video goes through the hero’s journey which is really
interesting and we’re definitely gonna rewatch that because I’m butchering that
right now and sort of give you a better breakdown on on what we’re talking about
so you can also create better videos on Facebook and YouTube in a lot yeah but I
guess the I guess the overall approach for that is just like something to take
away from it is that if you’re creating good enough video it doesn’t matter the
lengths were and if you are a product based business you should really look at
creating a video that’s long enough that tells people enough about your problem
enough about your product and how it’s a solution for them and following that
that the hero’s journey and that would help you sell more of your products so
it doesn’t always have to be those short videos so I think that’s why it’s a good
takeaway for us is that we’ve kind of pushed like do the shorter videos on
Facebook do the shorter videos here whereas long-form content can work
really well and in addition to short content yeah if you do it correctly

just to clarify they have to say heck yeah that’s awesome
okay you played heck yeah that’s no we’re not cool off I know it has to be
heck yet that’s awesome exactly alright second thing here is Instagram
more than likely in the last year or two you’ve probably moved over to Instagram
you may have created a profile but you’re not really posting there or if
you do it’s like some kind of grid where you have like three images cut out and
your profile is not filled out all the way or it’s not even a business profile
it is the fastest growing social network and just from going to the conference I
mean we’ve been telling businesses to be on Instagram but even more so now it’s
so important to be there it’s more of a you should be there now it’s more of
like you must be there now so it’s kind of like we were talking about with
Facebook before like it’s a must now and Instagram is kind of like a bonus now
it’s like you need to be on Instagram if you’re not there people are searching
for you that way a good customer base is there and if you’re not there they’re
wondering what’s going on with you so that’s why it’s so important a lot of
Christian went to a couple of tracks about Instagram and I went to one
specifically on Instagram it just how important it is and how good of results
businesses are getting from Instagram as well yeah I think that the one that I
went to was with I should have just look at looked up his name
Tyler McCall and it was more specific towards Instagram stories how to use
them when to post you know and going back to the essence of story and that
was my biggest takeaway from from his session was that you shouldn’t be
posting stories of like Aaron said earlier of your sandwich and just that’s
it that’s just my sandwich and we’ll call it a day stories always have a
beginning a middle and an end and everything that’s how you should be
thinking about when you’re creating stories is you know creating a
legitimate story with a beginning with the middle and an end so maybe you can
make a video like I’m thinking about curry are making me a sandwich today and
then the next one could be a poll of you know what type of saying which should I
make today and then the next one would be a little video it might be a couple
pictures of me creating the sandwich and then the last thing will be
another video maybe another couple pictures of me eating the sandwich and
saying how good it was and thanking my followers for giving me the suggestion
to eat PB&J right oh and like what does the PB&J looks like okay you really
screwed that up or like oh that looks a troller your PB&J I won’t want to and
getting more engagement or feedback yeah so that was my biggest takeaway from his
and like also something that he reiterated that we do a lot is using
Instagram DM’s to you know either get more clients or basically the question
that he was asked was was the one metric that he’s looking at and he said my the
responses that I get from Instagram direct messages hmm that’s the only
thing that he’s looking he’s not looking at likes he’s not looking at comments
he’s just looking at those connections that he could make through those
personal one-on-one connections that he can make through Instagram direct
message which were actively doing in order to get more business owners on our
different tip show like this so if you’re a business owner so plug in one
free Facebook advertising and want to jump on Tip For Tip listen yeah let us
know but yeah I think that’s I mean it is something that we’re doing but it’s
the reason why it’s so effective is like we can’t talk to all of you guys right
now in person it’s just physically impossible but with a direct message it
really is one-on-one with your potential ideal customer right they’re having
messaging back and forth so it’s super valuable and he may not have mentioned
in this track but it’s not always gonna be like this so you should get on it now
before people come in it’s now become bombarded and you know people know but
no longer look at it so in the next 18 months it may not be as effective so if
you’re watching this in 2021 maybe not a good strategy anymore but right now it’s
super effective yep quick shout out to Javier Hernandez he said hi hi hi
oh and Benny was jumped into yes I’ve been a shout out to Benny hi Benny we
should have dang it there is a show I used to watch but I used to like they
call like certain things like Oh like thanks for the
social plug or whatever like whenever people do that so instead of saying how
we’re like oh shout out or there’s some kind of name for the people so we can
give you good so if you have any cool names you want to be called nice names
alright and the last one number three is one that we’ve talked about a lot
extensively probably beating a dead horse telling you guys you know get on
video make sure you do this and the other one is Facebook so I went to a
couple of sessions my works more specifically towards Facebook Ads but
one thing that I went to a local marketing one for Facebook that a guy
was talking about was just how much business owners don’t use the tools that
facebook gives you for example you have the ability to click a button on there
and instead of getting Direction you have the ability to tell people and get
directions but instead of learn more or like get this coupon you have the
ability to send a button to them and say call my business and you could track
that you have another ability to get directions to your location you also
have the ability to put a geofence around your location and say everybody
who’s been in my area so if you have a high traffic area of giving those people
and offer only specific to them so there’s a lot of cool things with
Facebook that most local businesses talking to those specifically are not
using and if you have a brick-and-mortar location you should absolutely be using
Facebook to use these it shouldn’t just be creating the videos or doing that
content you should use some of the features that facebook gives you and one
way to do that is like if you’re gonna go post something you have the photo and
video option which you probably always choose but there’s always there’s ones
like the donate button or an offer button or directions or a phone number
all of those features are available to you and not very many people are using
them absolutely and I think I found about this two weeks ago but I didn’t
know that Facebook had a kind of like a creator studio or a place where you can
go and you know do all your posting instead of just doing it from your
timeline or going to your page you can go to the separate thing where it’s just
a creator studio and you have like just a little bit more tools and you can
visually see a little bit better your schedule post and things like that and the thing about Facebook is that they’re
always testing new things and always adding new options and new tools just
recently they added the ability for you to schedule appointments on your on your
page which is huge for for a lot of business owners for us too – yeah for us too –
so they’re always adding new things – to their platform and always testing
anything so something that’s kind of tricky because they might be testing
something that a couple of months from now you’re not gonna have any more
mm-hmm so that kind of sucks but it’s always good to be in the forefront of
you know what they’re doing and looking at those new things that are coming out
in order to take full advantage of that tool which is Facebook and one thing
that I did get out of all of this for all the social media marketing world is
it like when a social platform is telling you that something is new you
should do that because they’re rewarding you so for example one thing that we’re
not gonna talk about here but is a takeaway is like IGTV it’s brand new
we’re not gonna get into super depth you can go check it out you can google it
but Instagram is pushing it right now and not very many people are using it so
if you use IGTV you’re gonna be pushed up and used a lot more it’s kind of like
we started using Facebook live when it first came out and we were reaching a
lot of people because Facebook said we’re gonna push you up in the algorithm
because we want to push Facebook live so whenever something comes out with a new
feature or a new tool use that and you’re gonna get a lot more reach as
well yeah okay is that it that’s it those are the three things three things
yeah that’s that’s it cool obviously there’s a lot more stuff that we covered
or we went to at social media marketing world again once we get the recordings
for all these we should be able to do a little bit more in-depth and definitely
more content more valuable stuff for you guys to check out so be on the lookout
we we might even do more live videos talking about some of these things that
we’ve learned at at social media marketing world yeah two other things
