Dating News :: Sep 24th, 2019 : Match, Zoosk layoffs, and the London dating conference

I’m Mark Brooks and this is the 2 minute
Tuesday top news summary. Match Group is once again in some hot water
thanks to a new lawsuit from the Federal Trade Commission. The FTC is suing Match, alleging that the
company allowed fake messages to be sent to users to get them sign up for paid subscriptions. Match allows users to create profiles free
of charge, but prohibits them from responding to messages without paying. The FTC believes Match.com conned people into
paying for subscriptions using messages the company knew were from scammers. Match Group says those claims are outrageous
and intends to fight back in court. Meanwhile, dating site Zoosk is facing two
massive rounds of layoffs. One this year, and one next year. Zoosk was acquired earlier this year by Spark
Networks for a combination of cash and stock. The deal valued Zoosk at $258 Million. Spark Networks wrote in a letter to shareholders
that it plans to slash 66% of its workforce by the end of this year. It will then institute another round of layoffs
to cut 80% of the workforce by April, with Zoosk fully exiting San Francisco by the end
of June as a cost-cutting move. Zoosk had 93 employees in 2017. The writing was on the wall, when Spark bought
them of course. Spark is based in Berlin, and knows how to
run a tight ship. The GDI dating conference happened in London
this week and was a great success with 150 attendees. I was impressed by the quality of the speakers,
and the pace of the event. It’s amazing how much you can get into 15
minute presentations. At the show we learned more about Badoo’s
$100 million fund for growing new dating startups. Visionaries who can drive growth companies
should apply. Meanwhile, this week, Lovoo’s founder announced
that he’s looking for 5 startups to fund in and house in a startup campus in Dresden. Btw, the next one day GDI event will be in
March in New York, and I hope to see you there. That’s all for now folks. Thanks for watching. Don’t forget to subscribe to OPW.news for
