Verifying if your Google Tag Manager Code is Installed Properly using Google Tag Assistant

Verifying if your Google Tag Manager Code is Installed Properly using Google Tag Assistant

Google tag manager is a great way to get
your tracking codes on your website if you’ve installed Google tag manager
knowing that the tracking codes you install or will install are very
important for your business how do you verify if you’ve installed Google tag
manager correctly? In this video I’ll show you how to use tag assistant by
Google to do just that hey guys Kevin at Tru Lift Digital Marketing where we
help business owners and entrepreneurs help others through their products and
services with digital marketing whether you’ve installed Google tag manager
using the easy script install with a theme that you may have use the manual
method that I talked about in one of my other videos use the WordPress plugin or
simply got someone else to do it for you how do you verify that the code is
actually installed properly? Well the first thing I do is go to my website in
my case TruLiftDigital.com and once that loads basically
right-click anywhere on the page and go down to view page source and click on
that this is the code for your website so we just quickly need to verify that
the Google tag manager code shows up here as we can see at the top here this
is the head section and Google tag manager does a great job of identifying
which is their code which is right here so we’ve verified that the head portion
of the Google tag manager code is in fact there we just need to scroll down
and actually rather than do that I’m just gonna hit command F or ctrl F and
then just do a search for the body tag which is right here and we can see that
the Google tag manager script or code for the body section is also there okay
so we’ve identified that the head and body tags are in fact on the website so
we’re good there but now we just need to verify that the code is actually working
properly to do that we’ll use a tool from Google called tag assistant now
this is an extension that is only available to my knowledge using the
Chrome browser and to get to that we need to go to the chrome store so I’m
just going to go up to the top bar in Google and do a search for Chrome Web
Store alternatively you can just go to chrome.google.com forward slash webstore
I’m just gonna click on that first option
and then inside here just make sure that you’re in in extensions and in the
search portion here I’m just going to put tag assistant hit enter and this
first option is the one that we want I already have it installed so it’s asking
me for a rating for you it will have the option to add to chrome’ but I’m just
going to click on the option where you can find more information on the
extension if you want but all you need to do is just hit the add to Chrome
button and then follow the prompts that come up now since I already have the
extension installed on my browser I’m just going to X out of this tab right
here once you have the extension installed it will show up in the top of
your browser like this here if you then click on that you will go inside the
extension now by default since it takes memory to have the tag assistant enabled
on every tab of your browser the functionality is turned off but it needs
to be turned on you can have it turned on all the time or just for specific
websites which I’ll show you in just a second but for now let’s just click on
the enable button below and then just refresh the page and then just click on
the tag assistant one more time now I’ve already added some other tags through
Google tag manager and as you can see here I have two tags Google tag manager
and the Google Analytics tag if you haven’t added any tags to Google tag
manager yet Google tag manager will be the only tag visible here for you
I’ll just point out that I have other tags on my website including Facebook
tags which you can see with this Facebook pixel helper extension
here which I’ll talk about in another video but this tag assistant only shows
Google tags for the purpose of this video I just wanted to walk you through
the verification for Google tag manager as I will be installing all of my other
tags or tracking codes on my site through Google tag manager if you do it
that way as well then you would verify your individual tags that you put inside
of Google tag manager when you are logged into Google tag manager using the
preview and debug mode again a topic for another video
Google tag assistant has a color system green means that your tag is good blue
means that your tag is good but that Google maybe has some suggestions on how
you can improve it and red basically is bad it just suggests that there’s an
error in your code or that it is just not working properly now in this case my
Google tag manager tag is showing up as green so I know that it is good and
doing what it should be doing you can click on the individual tags to get more
information about them I’ll just click on my Google tag manager tag I don’t
have any red tags but if I did down towards the bottom
Google would make a suggestion as to what needs fixing I’ll just go out of
this tag by hitting the back arrow here and go inside of this blue tag since
it’s blue that means Google has a suggestion or comment for me down toward
the bottom you can see that it says non-standard implementation if you hover
over that and then go to the question mark and click on that it will give you
more detail on why this may be a problem I’m not gonna do that because in this
case I know why it is saying this and that is because I did not install the
Google Analytics tag directly on my site I put the tag inside of Google tag
manager which is installed on my site which is perfectly fine so I’m not
worried about that just so you know since I’m already aware of that and it
is not an issue to me I can just hover over the suggestion and this little X
shows up which I can click on to hide that message so that I don’t have to
keep seeing it and I can also do the same from the main screen here if you
hide that tag but you later want it back if you click on this icon up here it
will bring back what you hide but in gray if you no longer wish to hide it
where it used to have an X it now has a plus sign if you click on that it will
unhide the tag I’ve already verified when logging into Google tag manager
through the preview and debug mode that the Google Analytics tag is firing
properly but if this tag was red meaning that there is a problem I could do the
same thing and hover over the suggestion and then click on the question mark and
Google would help me correct the problem alternatively you can always go to the
three dots at the top and go to either visit Google+ community and click on
that or click on need help link to find out more information on tag assistant or
other specific problems you have there’s a lot more to tag assistant than I have
discussed here you can record yourself taking actions on your website to help
diagnose where your problems may exist you can click on the star icon at the
top to favourite specific sites that you want tag assistant to always be on for you
can click on the 3 dots to have tag assistant always on for all tabs at all
times if you want by turning the auto validation on by clicking on it but for
the purposes of this video that’s all that I wanted to show you as I mentioned
for me I will be putting all of my tracking codes on my site through Google
tag manager and so for those codes I can just verify them using the preview and
debug mode inside of Google tag manager I hope you found this video informative
